Nursing Interventions: Kaposi’s Sarcoma

  1. Listen to the patient’s fear and concerns and answer question promptly.
  2. If the patient has painful lesions, help him into a more comfortable position.
  3. Administer pain medication as ordered.
  4. Suggest distractions and help the patient with relaxation techniques.
  5. Supply the patient with high-calorie, high-protein meals.
  6. Provide rest periods if the patient tires frequently.
  7. Inspect the patient’s skin every shift. Look for new lesions and skin breakdown.
  8. Be alert for adverse effects of radiation therapy or chemotherapy such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and take steps to prevent or alleviate them.
  9. Monitor the patient for signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal or respiratory function.
  10. Offer emotional support to help the patient and family cope with the diagnosis and prognosis.
