Not so easy…
Try on someone with contractures so bad you have to go in from behind.
make it sure that ur going to insert in urethra not in vagina.
Let the patient cough to easily locate urethral opening in post delivery women… (public hospital procedure lol)
Very simple procedure
Never know how hard it is until you try it on a pedi pt…
Great if everything is where it’s supposed to be or pt is cooperative. If not, try a side approach
I thought u aren’t suppose to check the Ballon before insertion that’s what I’m being taught now
U always check the balloon before insertion. If it wouldnt inflate, would need a new kit.
I always doing it again and again…. i wanna try male….
Hahahaha! I remember these dummies. Im was better with the female than the male. Strange. Lol. Remember to always bring 2 and leave the first in the vagina to use as a “marker”. Lol
I am
Going to that one very Soon.
The most important point is to maintain asterile field , inflate the ballon and secure the cath.
Anyone ever see a meatus that actually looks like that….not! Wait until a surgeon decides he wants one inserted after the case has started and the patient is already prepared and draped….that will determine who can really insert a foley.
I was also recently taught not to inflate the balloon prior to insertion because EBP has shown that it is not necessary. During clinical I noticed some nurses do and some do not depending on personal preference. I have one done straight caths so I haven’t had to make that decision yet….
Check manufacture of cath set about inflating or not… some indicate not pre-inflating the balloon.
Actually you no longer check the balloon…inflating it causes stretching and most manufacturers advise not to anymore.
I work with several older nurses and they always check the balloon and it drives me nuts but I never say anything.
You should be care be course its a procedure which does not need contamination,.
There’s nothing wrong with sharing changes in practice with more experienced nurses…if it saves a CAUTI it is worth it.
Thank you
To maintain the sterility of the foleys
I dont expose the whole catheter from its plastic.just tear off the tip of the plastic, lubricate the tip of the foleys and insert gently.
I use gauze to seperate the labias because sometime i do find it slippery. Always check that its sterile h2o & not sodium chloride that i have on my sterile field for inflating the balloon.
I agree with Beth Goetz.:))
u ask the pt. dep breath so dat he she not fel d pain. bt of corse b4 u perform d procedure u make it sure ur equipmentz r all sterilize.
Very simple procedure but ofcorce need to becareful….
Would they really be wearing a watch and long sleeves?
This looks not sterile. And neither in germany nor in switzerland we use disinfection with iodine inside…
Surprised u no longer check the balloon, where did u get that from?.. Yes they forgot deep breath. I would never put iodine inside. Wish they would do more real life stuff in nursing books. They presume that ever patient can bend their knees n spread they’re legs.what about those with contract urges. I also wish facilities would have a guideline for what size cath to use. It’s frustrating when you don’t have what u need in stock. They forgot to ask the patient about allergies to latex, iodine. I would ask even if it was not on the resident chart. Sometimes u may not get immediate return of urine many patients have bladder spams. Catheters r one of the easiest procedures do. Try to talk with ur patient to help them relax.
I am a PCT and was taught to inflate the balloon before insertion. If you ever had a catheter inserted in yourself by an uncaring person you would give them only 1 try.
Ask your pt. to take a deep breath when inserting.
The model used for videos makes it look SO easy! First of all a real meat us is NEVER that wide open! Second of all residents who r confused or combative NEVER just lay there so cooperatively! Smh
Melanie Watson Blessed Lpn smh if it was only so easy them old ladies can get crazy lol : )
due respect to all the comments i red,i guess the procedure posted was the IDEAL/BASIC STEPS like for the NORMAL PATIENT but ofcorse if there are some patient condition like fractures, contructors or allergies those points should be watch out then..
